Airline NewsQuick Announcement: Porter Lowers Its VIPorter Fuel Surcharge to $20
A quick announcement worth flagging for anyone redeeming Porter points.
Back in March, Porter Airlines introduced a temporary $40 CAD fuel surcharge on VIPorter reward flight redemptions. The idea was to offset global aviation fuel prices, which had roughly doubled at the time. Importantly, that fee only ever applied to points redemptions and not to standard cash bookings.
When Porter rolled it out, they were upfront about one thing: the surcharge was meant to be temporary, and the plan was to remove it once fuel prices came back down to where they sat at the start of the year. Today we are seeing the first move in that direction.
As of today, Porter has cut the fuel surcharge from $40 to $20 for all new reward flight bookings. Fuel prices are still sitting around 50% above where they were last year, so the fee is not gone entirely, but Porter says it is continuing to monitor the market and will keep making adjustments as conditions improve.
What we appreciate here is the transparency. Porter set a clear benchmark for when the surcharge would come off, explained why it existed in the first place, and is now following through as fuel costs ease. That kind of honesty is not always a given in the airline world, and it is good to see the number heading in the right direction for anyone redeeming VIPorter points.
If you have been holding off on a Porter redemption, the math just got a little friendlier.
